Voice Installation

You install voices. Audio improves.

Hearoism's DM and characters speak using Apple's text-to-speech voices. Apple pre-installs some of these voices on your phone, and you can add more for free in iOS Settings. Adding voices can help make in-game characters sound more distinct and memorable, and less robotic.

How to Add Voices

The list of English voices is hidden in your iOS Settings app.

To find it, follow Accessibility → Read and Speak → Voices → English. The path there looks like this:

Four iOS Settings screens showing the path to the voice list: the main Settings list, the Accessibility screen, the Read and Speak screen, and the language list, with Accessibility, Read and Speak, Voices, and English each circled.

Once you have found the list of English voices, you should see Download buttons next to any voices that aren't installed. They look like this:

A voice row in the iOS voice list with a download button to its right.

So to add missing voices, just find them in the list and click the download button. The Search is handy for finding specific voices.

FAQ

Q1. Why doesn't Hearoism just install the voices for me?

It can't. This is a technical limitation of iOS. There is no API that lets an app download more of Apple's voices.

Q2. Can I use the smaller voices? Some of these are big.

Yes. Hearoism will use the best installed version of the available voices. For example, you can download regular Ava instead of Ava (Premium).

The Premium and Enhanced voices are often much better sounding, so prefer them if you have space.

When you do install a premium version, Hearoism doesn't use the lesser versions, so you can at least skip those. For example, if you download Ava (Premium) then you don't need regular Ava.

Q3. What if I don't want the voices anymore?

You can delete the voices by clicking the Edit button, which adds a delete button next to voices that can be uninstalled. Like this:

Q4. I still need help, what can I do?
